Crystal to return to Antarctica region in 2013
Crystal Cruises is very pleased to be able to include Antarctica in its 2013 collection of itineraries. Following extensive research and logistical planning, the ultra-luxury line determined that Crystal Symphony could comply with stringent new regulations set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), which banned the carriage of Heavy Fuel Oils (HFO) in the Antarctic region south of S 60 degrees.

In 2009, Crystal operated what it expected to be its last visit to Antarctica. Beginning in 2011, a ban on the carriage of HFO on board effectively prohibited the sailing of many passenger vessels in the Antarctic. Most cruise ships do not have the tank capacity to exclusively carry the required distillate fuel for an extended period of time. To comply with the new IMO regulations, ships must ensure that they do not enter south of S 60 degrees with any HFO on board. Instead, they can only carry and operate on specific distillates, such as Marine Gas Oil (MGO), and they must have the tank capacity to carry the lighter (and much more expensive) MGO for an extended period of time.

Following a thorough investigation, Crystal confirmed that it could comply with the new restrictions. Crystal Symphony’s engines could successfully operate with MGO and the company could plan for the challenging logistics of supplying the vessel.

“Complying with the regulations requires careful planning and logistic procedures at a great premium, and Crystal Cruises is very sensitive to respecting the oceans and lands in which we travel,” says Crystal President Gregg Michel.

Crystal Symphony will cruise Antarctica for three days during Crystal Symphony’s Buenos Aires to Valparaiso South America cruise around Cape Horn during its 2013 Christmas/New Year cruise.
