Crystal expands Asian specialty cuisine with Din Tai Fung
With a tradition of presenting diverse, high quality culinary experiences in unique and ground-breaking ways, ultra-luxe Crystal Cruises announces the addition of “Chinese comfort food” on Crystal Serenity. Developed in association with Din Tai Fung--a Michelin-starred, NY Times “top ten restaurants in the world,” with branches across Asia and in the U.S.—the regional fare is available at casual deck dinners in Tastes café. An authentic menu of steamed dumplings, noodles, soups, rice and vegetables complements the myriad of upscale dining choices on a Crystal cruise, such as Nobu Matsuhisa’s revered cuisine in Silk Road.

The association is the result of a global effort in development for more than a year and a half. Crystal visited Din Tai Fung’s Taiwan home base, hosted brain-storming sessions in Australia and Hong Kong, and spent months investigating suitable equipment for proper cuisine production within the ship’s galley spacing. Upon the equipment’s installation, Din Tai Fung chefs spent more than two months on board, training Crystal chefs in the nuances of fare preparation. Guest-testing of the cuisine occurred on the final legs of Crystal’s 2011 World Cruise, with 20% of guests opting for this alternative dining experience every night.

“Guests with sophisticated palettes enjoy exploring specialties from around the world,” says Crystal Vice President of Food and Beverage Operations, Toni Neumeister. “This simple, but exciting, menu received rave reviews during testing. Luxury today isn’t always about lavish; it can be about authenticity, which this delivers.”

Among the dim sum-like delicacies are:
  • Steamed Shrimp and Pork Shiaomai
  • Steamed Mushroom Vegetarian Dumpling
  • Noodles with Sesame and Peanut Sauce

    A perfect fit, like Crystal, Din Tai Fung’s food philosophy is that it’s “not just a technique, but an art.”

    Extraordinary culinary experiences are a hallmark of every Crystal vacation. Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity’s extensive, innovative choices include coveted cheese and wine cellars, overseen by onboard, certified cheese and wine sommeliers; fresh, chef-like cocktails served by certified mixologists; and gourmet dining options at every meal, whether at Crystal’s central Dining Room, high tea, or in Nobu Matsuhisa and Piero Selvaggio’s specialty restaurants. Open Dining by Reservation adds to Crystal’s dining choices.
